Zhang Jiao (?-184)
Leader of the "Huang Jin Zhi Luan" (“Yellow Turban Rebellion”), Zhang Jiao was a follower of Taoist beliefs. According to legend, a mysterious and aged man, whom many believed to be god Huang-Lao-Jun, gave Zhang Jiao the manuscript of the Tai-Ping Tao (“The Way of Supreme Peace”). After Zhang Jiao’s medicines helped cure thousands of an epidemic that was sweeping the land, he perceived that the time was ripe to rise up against the oppressive reign of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Wearing yellow scarves around their heads, the rebels soon numbered over half a million, and rapidly conquered much territory. However, the Han Dynasty sent their greatest generals against the uprising, and it was soon put down.
He was said to be a sorcerer, and the grandson of the founder of the Tianshi Dao (Celestial Masters) Sect of Taoism, Zhang Daoling. It can be considered ironic that he was known as a great healer, yet died of an illness.
